#32 GEO: Does your territory or company appear in the responses from ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini?

Type "best family ski resort in France" into ChatGPT or Claude. Chamonix appears in seconds—driven by its 5 million annual visitors, 312 tourist attractions, and a structured digital presence. Now type the name of your region. Or your association, your SME. Chances are you're not there. It's not a problem of visibility. It's a problem of structure.

SEO and GEO: two different games

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is about being visible in search engine results. This involves optimizing pages for Google, building backlinks, and working on keywords. The logic is straightforward: a page ranks for a specific search query.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) addresses another question: how to appear in the synthetic response generated by an AI like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity? These systems don't list links—they formulate a response. And to do so, they draw on sources they deem reliable, structured, and consistent.

Good SEO doesn't guarantee good geo-citability. You can rank first on Google and still be absent from all AI search results. The test is simple: ask ChatGPT a question about your industry or region. Who gets mentioned? Why them and not you?

Why this is critical right now for local areas and SMEs

In 2024, approximately 13% of Google searches already triggered an AI-generated response (AI Overview). By 2026, this share exceeds 30%, according to several SEO observatories. For certain categories of queries—"what to do in X", "best provider Y in Z", "how to choose a web host"—the rate is significantly higher.

When AI provides a direct response, the user no longer clicks. What isn't mentioned at this stage no longer matters — even if the website exists, even if the Google listing is complete.

For regions, tourist offices, and SMEs, the stakes are high: a competitor who masters GEO (Global Economic Optimization) captures information demand even before the visitor or prospect arrives at a comparison site. In our analysis of the Attractiveness Canvas for Chamonix, the "Transport Access" dimension scores 58/100 despite 18,400 SNCF (French National Railway) journeys per week—because the negative perception of the congested N205 highway overshadows the objective data. A region with a well-structured GEO can correct this asymmetry: structural data becomes citable if it is properly formalized.

The five levers to become citable by AI

Structured data ( Schema.org ): Tags such as LocalBusiness, TouristAttraction, and Event allow AI to understand what an entity is and its attributes. Without them, the AI aggregates fragments; with them, it cites an identified entity.

Source consistency: an AI compares your website, your Google listing, Wikipedia, press articles, and reviews. The more the sources converge, the higher the trust—a fragmented presence generates almost no citability.

Content in Q&A sections and definitions: AI prefers texts that directly answer a question. A structured paragraph like "What is X?" is much more quoteable than a sales description.

Sectoral authority: being cited by recognized sources (press, institutions, data.gouv.fr , DATAtourisme, INSEE) structurally strengthens the signal of trust.

Clear architecture: the confusion FOS Réunion / Run Vacances Bleu & Vert identified in our RVBV diagnostic perfectly illustrates the problem — without consistent digital identity, AI does not know who is what, and does not cite anyone.

And now ?

The good news: a GEO citability audit can be done quickly based on your existing digital presence. The bad news: the longer you wait, the more your competitors who are acting now capture the trust of AI models—and that trust is built slowly.

At Agence Alps, the GEO audit is part of our "Digital Presence" module. The six dimensions analyzed in the Strategic Diagnostic now include AI civicability. For a region, this is integrated into the Attractiveness Canvas as a signal of the "Digitalization" dimension. Want to know where you stand?
